Digital signal processing (DSP) refers to various techniques for improving the accuracy and reliability of digital communications. This can involve multiple mathematical operations such as compression, decompression, filtering, equalization, modulation and demodulation to generate a signal of superior quality. In the real-world, analog products detect signals such as sound, light, temperature or pressure and manipulate them. Converters such as an Analog-to-Digital converter then take the real-world signal and turn it into the digital format of 1's and 0's. From here, the DSP takes over by capturing the digitized information and processing it. DSP applications include audio and speech processing, sonar, radar and other sensor array processing, spectral density estimation, statistical signal processing, digital image processing, data compression, video coding, audio coding, image compression, signal processing for telecommunications, control systems, biomedical engineering, and seismology, among others. This paper will describe digital signal processing techniques for the above cases.
